Clark Suprynowicz
Composer

Clark Suprynowicz spent many years in the trenches as a jazz musician before decamping to compose full-time. His work as a bassist includes stints with Tom Waits, John Zorn, Herb Ellis, and Max Roach. He has recorded with Tom Waits, Bill Frisell, Jerry Granelli, Jane Ira Bloom, Aina Kemanis and others. His suite of original songs "In Sleep A King," with Rinde Eckert, is available from Sound Aspects records. After moving west in the nineteen-eighties Clark co-founded the Bay Area Jazz Composers Orchestra with composer Paul Nash, and wrote numerous scores for that ensemble. His opera "Ariadne," was produced at SF City College by City Summer Opera in 1999. Other work for the stage includes "Paramus, New Jersey and Other Places" (produced at ODC in San Francisco), and scores for both the Shotgun Players and the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival. His work has been commissioned by Meet the Composer/California, by the Zellerbach Family Fund, by the American Composers Forum and others. He is currently writing a woodwind quintet for City Winds, commissioned by the Bay Area chapter of the American Composers Forum. His original opera, "Caliban Dreams," commissioned by the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, is slated to premiere in the Fall of 2003.
